ReplyDeleteEscape is not the problem and/or the reason no one ever escaped the palace, I think it is the logic: ‘no one has done it, therefore it must be impossible.’ that is wrong and if that were true there would not be as many inventions as there are now, and there would be changes to our world no one would guess. Prometheus is an irregular character as seen in the book he is different from his brothers and feels punished for it. He has more control of his actions and does not seem to feel as restricted by the council as his peers. He is taller and he is faster academically than the other boys. He has a discovery, a box that he felt like he had to show the High Council. He wants to prove what he found is great and he is trying to disprove the rules.
The novel reminds me of the Truman Show, the movie and the novel share some key points. The book and movie have a higher/larger group of people that know what is going on and is making the rules. The central character in each goes through trials and test and finds out the life they have been living is not perfect. There is dramatic irony in each as well, in Anthem the council knows about the box and what it can do but has rules against introducing new inventions. The movie entails the main character that has been videotaped since birth and has to decide if the reality has been living is, in fact, a reality he realizes his reality to be false in pursuing a love interest, much like Anthem. A quote from Truman Burbank at the end of the movie, “ We accept the reality of the world with which we are presented.”

ReplyDeleteIn the world they live in not following the rules is completely unheard of. The guards don’t think anyone will ever try to escape since they are trained to not do something out of the normal. It has never happened in years past so they guards did not expect it to happen then. The people living there also think it is customary and there is no other way to live. “It was easy to escape from the Palace of Corrective Detention.”(part 6) It is clear they know they can break free from their detention. Since no one has done it before it does not even occur to them no one was keeping them from leaving. “The locks are old on the doors and there are no guards about. There is no reason to have guards, for men have never defied the Councils so far as to escape from whatever place they were ordered to be.”(part 6) In this quote, they make it obvious that it is easy to escape and they are aware of that. Yet it seems like they don’t know how to in a way, everyone is so used to following the rules no one has broken them. Also, I think this is where Equality’s understanding of his situation is growing, he knows he can leave. This makes him the first person to escape from the Correction Detention.
Another thought I have is that they don’t know how to be independent. Almost everything they do is with each other and everyone is treated the same. “Tell man he must live for others. Tell men that altruism is the ideal.”(TSC) I think this is the mindset they had, that they were living only to help others. Anything they did was done with someone else, never alone. “Kill man’s sense of values. Kill his capacity to recognize greatness or achive it”(TSC) That seems very fitting to how the society Prometheus is living in. All the men there are following stern rules and makes them unable to be different and discover new things. The people running the society don’t want them to figure out there is another way to live. “Happy men are free men.” (TSC) This is exactly why they don’t want anyone to escape becasue if they do they will finally be happy and won’t want to come back. When Prometheus first escapes he does not know what to do with himself, there was so much more freedom.

In Anthem Equality was put in the Palace of Corrective Detention because he didn’t tell the Council why he was going into the tunnel that he found the invention of Electricity. When he got there he was the only one to break out of the prison he was the only brother to test the Society and get into more trouble than he already is. He also was the only person to think freely and testify the city's rules that weren’t right. All of the other brothers think that everything is normal and alright without giving it any thought but Equality was able to see through the lines and figure out what was wrong with the rules or the society and what the society was keeping them from knowing. “Our discovery is too great for us to waste our time in sweeping the streets. We must not keep our secret to ourselves, nor buried under the ground.” Equality says this quote while he is in the prison, Equality wants to escape because the World Council is coming to their Society and he wants to show his invention to them so they can advance living in all of the other societies in the world.
Ayn Rand put this scene in the book because she wanted to tell everyone to not to just go with what the system says and even if people know that the system is wrong no one tries to use their voice and try and change it. In the book no one tried to break out of the prison because the law said that they couldn’t even though there were no locks on the doors and no one will notice that you broke out because the Council thinks that no one will even try. These scenes in the book also relates to the documentary “ Inequality For All” . Robert Reich explains that the middle class of America doesn’t think or doesn’t know that the government is taking money from them and giving it to the rich and wealthy. Back in the 70’s having one job used to be enough to support the family but now not even having both parents work is enough to have a steady flow of money and not to worry that they will become homeless. “Bankruptcy laws allow companies to smoothly reorganize, but not college graduates burdened by student loans.” Robert Reich says this because some people now are 20 to 30 years out of college and they still have college fee’s to pay off.

ReplyDeleteNo one has dared to escape the Palace of Detention because there are no better options. Honestly, what would you choose, keep the life that you're fully content with, or risk losing it? To the people in this society, there is no choice, no other option; they have no say in the matter of the quality of their life because it is decided for them. No one has a real chance to persevere in this civilization for it is one of hypocrisy, everyone is supposed to be equal yet there is a social pyramid that forbids anyone from becoming better. What you get in the end is a group of indoctrinated beings with no soul one soever but man will always persevere, “I understand that centuries of chains and lashes will not kill the spirit of man nor the sense of truth within him.". This is why no one tries escaping the prison, no one is capable of escape because of their instincts have been adjusted for the societies benefit, but as Equality says in the quote "The only way to break free of society's chains is to seclude yourself from it, To be free, a man must be free of his brothers. That is freedom. This and nothing else.”.
When Equality has broken free of his chains he makes rules for himself that will keep him as far away from his past society as he can, one of the more important ones is “I am neither foe nor friend to my brothers, but such as each of them shall deserve of me. And to earn my love, my brothers must do more than to have been born.”. Equality is determined to push himself away from his toxic society as much as possible so he can focus the rest of his time on his life and restoring the life that his ancestors created. The challenges that Equality have gone through will all be worth it because he will have his freedom "he will see him in his own proper place, and not in another; and he will contemplate him as he is."(Allegory of a Cave). Equality will be at peace in his new home and he won't be able to imagine himself anywhere else. Equality ventured out of his safe life because he sought out the secrets of his world, “The secrets of this earth are not for all men to see, but only for those who will seek them (pg. 52).”.

The reason the locks are old and there is an absence of security is because the prisoners never try to escape. I believe there are two reasons for this occurrence. The rules of the society in Anthem are so strict, the prisoners might be afraid to try. There is such an intense presence of authority, the idea that guards may be waiting outside the door is most likely very prominent in the prisoners head. They are also beaten and whipped, which leaves them in pain and immense fear of what lurks outside the door. “The first blow of the lash felt as if our spine had been cut in two.-ch. 6” However, equality has begun to adopt the idea of self and rebel against the government, so he was not afraid of the consequences. “His vision, his strength, his courage came from his own spirit. A man's spirit, however, is his self. That entity which is his consciousness. To think, to feel, to judge, to act are functions of the ego.” Ayn
Another reason for why the prisoners do not try to escape could be the fact that they don't know they're in prison. The people in anthem refer to themselves as “we” instead of “I,” they say “ours,” not “mine,” and they are unbeknownst to the concept of Ego. from birth, they do not choose their faith, for it is assigned to them. They live under extremely strict rules and are constantly monitored to ensure that they stick to their restrictions. “Inequality is bad for everyone, not just the middle class and the poor.” -Reich. Because of this, they see no difference between everyday life and being locked up in a cell. In a way, Everyday is prison for them. Since they have never been enlightened to true freedom, there is no freedom that can be taken away. Similar to Allegory of a Cave by Plato, they have never left the cave. “But I am done with this creed of corruption.” Rand P. 97

When prisoners are inside the Palace of Corrective Detention, I believe they will not escape even though the locks can be easily broken because they do not want to leave the “in crowd”. They are afraid to be different, because they are not enlightened and know better than to try to escape, “Men realizes he's incapable of what he's accepted as the noblest virtue- and it gives him a sense of guilt, of sin, of his own basic unworthiness.” (The soul of a collectivist) Their own thoughts have been pushed out, making them believe that what they are doing now is normal. The people in the society only know what they have been told and how thinking your own thoughts are bad and if you do think them you are breaking the rules, “Its soul gives up its self respect. You’ve got him. He’ll obey. He’ll be glad to obey because he can’t trust himself, he feels uncertain, he feels unclean.” (The soul of a collectivist) because these rules are like this, it is all they know is being one big group. This takes me back to the question on “why wont people break out of the Palace of Corrective Detention if the lucks on the doors can be equally broken”. They are brainwashed by these rules and dont know better. Prometheus was different though, “It was easy to escape from the Palace of Corrective Detention. The locks are old on the doors and there are no guards about,” (anthem end of 6) He was the only one who was enlightened by this idea of escaping and being different. He wasn't afraid of the consequences, as Ayn Rand herself says, “Learn to value yourself, which means: to fight for your happiness,” and this is exactly what he did.
What if some prisoners might not even realize they are one? What if they think they are there on purpose for a good reason, not realizing its for something bad. " For the Council of Vocations knows in its great wisdom where you are needed by your brother men, better than you can know it in your unworthy little minds.” ( page one of Anthem) They are almost not even aloud to think for themselves, making it like they are trapped inside their own bodies trying to figure out what's wrong with them. “Freedom is the one value conservatives place above all others, yet time and again, their ideal of freedom ignores the growing imbalance of power in our society that's eroding the freedoms of most people.” - Robert Reich. Reich talks about living free and being able to have thoughts for yourself, and because Prometheus's communities thoughts were forced out of them, they dont know whats right or wrong. All they know is their assigned job, so when they do something to make them end up in the Palace of Corrective Detention, they will not know why. Even though they are put in the corrective detention, no one would even think to move because all they know is what their told.

ReplyDeletePrompt #2
The reason why the guards don’t guard the Palace of Corrective Detention because they think that no one will defy the council by escaping the palace that is why they don’t guard the palace. Also, the people that are prisoned don’t realize they have the capability to do that, they start to think it is a risk to defy the council.
The reason why this is on the book it is to help us that we should speak for ourselves not to be under the people that command us what to do in our lives, what job we do, or who you are going to marry. Once they start controlling your lives they start to think that they won't be defied by their society because of the rules they said and the consequences.
Ben Worthley
ReplyDelete“If you learn how to rule one single man’s soul” this is a quote from the soul of the collectivest. It's about control. This quote relates both to anthem and to the real world. In Anthem all the different Councils are in charge of everything. And all the different Councils have the other councils that have power over them. Like in the real world in everyday life someone is in charge of you. At work it is your boss if you are the boss you have someone like the ceo telling you what to do and if you are the ceo you have the shareholders or the board of directors telling you what to do. Know matter what you have someone telling you what to do you have someone telling you what to do.
“Give up your soul to a council — or give it up to a leader.” this quote is directly relating to anthem and the real world. In Anthem there is a council for everything. In the real world there is a coucles ( the senate ) that makes important decisions. What I believe the quote is saying is that you have a choice. To give up all the power to a group of people or to just have one person make all the decisions.
Evan Brenner
ReplyDeleteIn the novel Anthem, I think Prometheus foresees a struggle with his collectivist world because he has ideas that nobody in the community has ever encountered before. In chapter 3-4 Equality has discovered electricity. Equality knows that it is a big discovery, but doesn’t know if the council will accept it. ”We, Equality 7-2521, have discovered a new power of nature. And we have discovered it alone, and we alone are to know it.” (Anthem). The problem with this is that no one can be smarter or more superior to anyone. If one sees themself as an individual, the people think that the community will fall apart. “Man cannot survive except through his mind. He comes on earth unharmed. His brain is his only weapon” (Soul of an individualist). Equality believes he should not be punished for his great discovery and the council should at least give him a chance.
Equality thinks he will prevail because his discovery is so good and could help the community a lot. Also some people may have similar feelings as him, but are afraid to show it because they know it will be rejected. The society is missing out on his great idea because the council is forbidding it. Also they forbid learning and growing of other individuals. “A leader is someone who steps back from the entire system and tries to build a more collaborative, more innovative system that will work over the long term”. (Robert Reich). Equality is trying to be a leader, but the council is forbidding everything he tries to do. This shows that Equality is against all of this and believes that he should be able to give his ideas and not be interrupted. Also given a fair chance to give his whole thought of it.

ReplyDeleteThe enlightenment Prometheus finds at the end of “Anthem” could not be less compatible with the collectivist, selfless structure of the society he escaped from, and so he knows that the journey to bring individualism back to the world will be long and hard. Even for the people still in the society that still have spirit, they have been taught that their uniqueness is a sin, a burden, and Plato’s “Allegory of a Cave” discusses the fact that people may want to hold onto these ideals, no matter how false and ridiculous the enlightened know they are. But regardless of how much faith they have in themselves, Prometheus will still fight for them and for the “evil ones” that came before, for “theirs is the banner in my hand. And I wish I had the power to tell them that the despair of their hearts was not to be final, and their night was not without hope. For the battle they lost can never be lost. For that which they died to save can never perish. Through all the darkness, through all the shame of which men are capable, the spirit of man will remain alive on this earth.” (103-104). Prometheus has shown that he will fight for the good of all men, as he sees that they, in the temples of their spirit, do not have the freedoms that he, and we, believe to be basic fundamental rights that these people should possess as humans. “For in the temple of his spirit, each man is alone. Let each man keep his temple untouched and undefiled. Then let him join hands with others if he wishes, but only beyond his holy threshold.” (96).
In spite of all this difficulty, Prometheus believes that he will prevail because he and his supporters in this fight will be motivated by their desires for a future where they are free to live however they wish, while the opposition will fight solely because they were told to, with no personal willpower to back up their plight. Throughout “Anthem”, Prometheus is acting in what he believes to be the benefit of society, working tirelessly to perfect his harnesser of electricity that he knew could save lots of resources and benefit the environment, but was rejected because he had worked on it alone, and “What is not done collectively cannot be good.” (73). Now, Prometheus fights for a world where he will not be persecuted for coming up with anything new on his own. He fights for his future and for those of everyone like him- the great thinkers, whose impeccable visions have been the laughing stock of a society that cannot accept what doesn’t fall under the social norm. As Prometheus has stated, “I am done with the monster of ‘We,’ the word of serfdom, of plunder, of misery, falsehood and shame.” (97), and “I am not a tool for their use. I am not a servant of their needs. I am not a bandage for their wounds. I am not a sacrifice on their altars.” (95). And what do the collectivists fight for? Over a lifetime of suppressing individuality of any sort and being told that anything against exactly what they are told is great evil, the common person has become a mindless robot who blindly accepts anything thrown at them by their superiors but flat-out rejects anything new, exciting, and different, just because it is new, exciting, and different. The collectivists have no personal motivation to fight- or to do anything else. They gather on the battlefield because they were told to, and believe they will easily prevail simply because their superiors said their numbers alone are enough.

Prompt 1:
In the novel “Anthem”, by Ayn Rand, Prometheus undergoes a struggle throughout his story that he is different from everyone else in his society. Throughout the book, he has made discoveries that no one else in his society has ever made before. As well as finding love with Gaea, (the golden one). He never sought of himself as part of his society, more as an individual. When he shares his idea with the council of scholars, they are scared of it and adapting to change because they have never seen anything like it before. He was mistreated and locked away for just trying to make things in society easier and better. “We seized our box, we shoved them aside, and we ran to the window. We turned and we looked at them for the last time, and a rage, such as it is not fit for humans to know, choked our voice in our throat."You fools!" we cried. "You fools! You thrice-damned fools!" (part 7). Prometheus is angry, he is also a mixed a confused and unaware, of why the council of scholars rejected his idea when he thought that it could’ve been the key to change the way things worked in society. “But I still wonder how it was possible, in those graceless years of transition, long ago, that men did not see whether they were going, and went on, in blindness and cowardice, to their fate. I wonder for it is hard for me to conceive how men who knew the word "I" could give it up and not know what they lost. But such has been the story, for I have lived in the City of the damned, and I know what horror men permitted to be brought upon them.” (part 12). This can help explain parts to why Prometheus foresees a struggle with his collectivist world because he is still asking himself questions to why he was able to live for so long in that society.
Later on in the novel equality thinks he will prevail to his society because of his knowledge and his ability to make discoveries.as he may not have been the only one in the collectivist society that had the same thoughts as him, he is the only on that took action and that's probably why he does not have any remorse for his brothers still struggling in his society back home. “I owe nothing to my brothers, nor do I gather debts from them. I ask none to live for me, nor do I live for any others. I covet no man's soul, nor is my soul theirs to covet. I am neither foe nor friend to my brothers, but such as each of them shall deserve of me. And to earn my love, my brothers must do more than to have been born. I do not grant my love without reason, nor to any chance passer-by who may wish to claim it. I honor men with my love. But honor is a thing to be earned.” (part 11). This can show how the society that Prometheus's prevision is different from his collectivist society because people need to earn his love/respect. “Here on this mountain, I and my sons and my chosen friends shall build our new land and our fort. And it will become like the heart of the earth, lost and hidden at first, but beating, beating louder each day. And the word of it will reach every corner of the earth. And the roads of the world will become as veins which will carry the best of the world's blood to my threshold. And all my brothers and the Councils of my brothers will hear of it, but they will be impotent against me.” (part 12). This quote can help show that he is trying to create something strong, that will stand up against his collectivist society.
Frankie Huntress
ReplyDeleteNear the end of the book, Prometheus states“the day will come when I shall . . . raze the cities of the enslaved” and that “the Councils of my brothers will be impotent against me.” this is stating that the council will fight him because he is the opposite of what they want in a society because he is an individualist in a collectivist society. Prometheus goal is to go in find all of the people who are not already so brainwashed by the ideas of there society that they can come and see the light of being an iduvidlist. He could not take everyone because once somebody is to into the collectivist belief expesliy one that is soul idea is that individualism is bad.this is why Prometheus thinks there will be a struggle in the future
The collectivist society is one that is together and all are equal the one problem that individualists don't like about the collectivist idea is that when everybody is equal you don't really care about what you do because of when an investment banker and a janitor get the same wage or in anthems case the same everything. In a collectivist society, there are people with many different jobs getting the same amount of money but the thing is if you get the same amount of money no one will try to move up in the jobs because if working harder gets you nothing then nobody will do it because they have no stive for successes. That is why the individualists want the collective to change
Q: Why do you think Prometheus foresees a struggle with his collectivist world?
ReplyDeleteA: Prometheus foresees a struggle with his collectivist world because all of his people were enslaved. No man or woman was allowed to have freedom, but to do jobs assigned by the Council of Vocations without voicing their complaints or questions. And if they discovered a new power or disobey their duty, they would be lashed. They couldn’t even suppress happiness, love or any emotion at all. The bosses for each of the jobs don’t care for their employees, they only care about themselves. Quotes that proves my answer is from Robert Reich’s “Inequality for All” and from Ayn Rand’s “The Soul of the Individualist”. Reich says, “We do not want to live in a theocracy. We should maintain that barrier and government has no business telling someone what they ought to believe or how they should conduct their private lives,” and that “Freedom is the one value conservatives place above all others, yet time and again, their ideal of freedom ignores the growing imbalance of power in our society that's eroding the freedoms of most people”. Rand says, “A man’s spirit, however, is himself”, “No man can live for one another” and, “He is a parasite in motive and makes parasites of those he serves”.
Q: The old locks and lack of guards in the Palace of Corrective Detention indicate that prisoners never try to escape. Why do you think they do not? In your essay, consider the following excerpt from Ayn Rand’s novel The Fountainhead, titled “The Soul of a Collectivist.” Also, use examples from Inequality for All by Robert Reich as a means of showing modern day examples.
A: I think the prisoners do not escape because they are collectivists. Collectivism is when people don’t think their life belongs to them, but the guards and the Palace of Collective Detention. Quotes that support my answer are from Ayn Rand’s “The Soul of a Collectivist” and from Robert Reich’s “Inequality for All.” Rand says, “Remember the Roman Emperor who said he wished humanity had a single neck so he could cut it off?”, “One country is dedicated to the proposition that that man has no rights, that the collective is all”, and “Kill the individual. Kill man’s soul. The rest will follow automatically.” Reich says, “Before the rise of the nation-state, between the eighteenth and twentieth centuries, the world was mostly tribal. Tribes were united by language, religion, blood, and belief. They feared other tribes and often warred against them”, “Increasingly, corporate nationality is whatever a corporation decides it is.”

ReplyDeletePrompt 2
In the Palace of corrective detention, there is an extreme lack of guards and the locks of the cells are old and rusted. One quote that resonates with this would be, “There is no reason to have guards, for men have never defied the Councils so far as to escape from whatever place they were ordered to be.” (part six of Anthem). The people of Anthem are so compliant and unenlightened that nobody thinks for themselves and if they do they get punished for doing so. “tell man that he must live for others. Tell men that altruism is the ideal.” this quote is from the soul of the collectivist. This goes along with Anthem because they are taught that they cannot think for themselves or use the word “I”. The society is taught that they must listen to directions and go where they are told.
Nobody thinks for his or her independent self in a society where the citizens never have been trained to not break rules. “The question isn't who is going to let me; it's who is going to stop me.” (Ayn Rand). When Equality broke free from his imprisonment, nobody was there to stop him. The rusted locks and the lack of guards was a sign that nobody has tried to escape from the palace of Corrective Detention. “The locks are old on the doors and there are no guards about” The end of part six in Anthem when Equality broke free from his societies prison of blindness. “ Learn to value yourself, which means: to fight for your happiness”(Ayn Rand) Equality has started thinking for himself which is unheard of in the Society. Equality is one of the first people to do so, he hid and had thought of the invention of electricity and when he broke out of prison he ran away so he would not have to stay in “the cave”, Equality had been enlighted and wanted to show people the independence but nobody would have believed him.
