Due Wednesday, October 31st - The Philosophy of Ayn Rand

Overview: We are going to embark on a journey through writing. This will require you to go out of your comfort zone and apply what you have learned through our class discussions of Anthem and Inequality for All. We will begin by reading some philosophy by Ayn Rand together. In her novels, Rand created characters that exemplified the ideals of Equality-2527, or Prometheus. These reading will also be used in the writing process, so please give this work your full attention.

Directions: We will read and explore these three pieces from the Ayn Rand institute together. When we finish you will be asked to use evidence from these texts. Take notes as we read and explore. In this blog space, please post three paragraphs one for each of the following readings.  Write about things you find interesting, connections to Anthem, and questions you have for me about Rand's philosophy.

    Introduction to Objectivism

I think that selfishness gets overlooked a lot of the time because when people look at the word they think that it is someone who only cares for himself and doesn’t care about anyone else but Ayn Rand think s selfish people are people that look out for themselves and they make sure that they are living their live to the fullest because it may be the only life you get on this earth, She also thinks that it means to take the shots and not give up the shots because someone is in your way.

    2) The Soul of an Individualist (From For the New Individualist) by Ayn Rand

I think that new inventions get shut down a lot because people are afraid of change. I also think that people may not be enlightened yet and it may take a long time to get them to see things from your point of view. Another problem is when people are so used to doing something one way and it will take years for them to get enlightened in the new way of life.

    3) The Soul of the Collectivist (From For the New Individualist) by Ayn Rand

I think that people when they get put in a group just agree with other ideas and if that idea may be wrong you can’t speak up and say that this idea is wrong and just goes with what the others say. Another problem with just going with things the group comes up with is when it comes time to present the project you have no idea what to say and the teacher may notice that and you may get a bad grade on the project because people are to shy to speak up.

I agree with your first paragraph because when Ayn Rand uses the word selfish I think people lean more towards it being rude, but Ayn means that you just care about yourself too which is good.

    Introduction to Objectivism

Ayn Rand uses the word selfishness meaning that the people who are, take care of themselves. I believe she didn't mean the word selfish as being mean to others but more on thinking about yourself, and showing self love. She believes to put your own self first and to think about only you. What I dont think she means is to forget about everyone else but to just mainly think and address yourself. Ayn Rand says in the video how you only have one life and thats all you get, so I think that she just wants people to know that they dont always have to worry about others but mostly on themselves to live their best life.

    The Soul of an Individualist

I think that it takes great courage for someone this day and age to put out something new and fresh. Being enlightened for the first time can make people scared and confused. They do not like it so they would “torture” the person who creates it, even if this idea was a great one. But in the end they seem to always win because people come to their senses and realize their vision was a great one.

    The Soul of the Collectivist

When people are put into groups their ideas start to form into one big idea that is not individual. I think that what Ayn Rand was trying to say was that people are not having their own ideas anymore and are only thinking about what the other person is thinking and trying to be like them. I believe that no one is trying to be themselves because they are too scared to branch out.

    1. I personally live the idea of objectivism. The idea is that you should be selfish in the way that makes you happy. Like if you want a good life you should work hard and do what you love. Ayn Rand believed that you only get one life so you should make the best out of it. She also believed this are what they are and there is nothing we can do about it. She believed in the pursuit of your own happiness. Like if you want a job you don't let people hold you down or say “you shouldn't get that job.” She also learned how to listen to reason like we are all going to die someday you can’t control that. She thought that working hard was not a bad thing.

    2. This theory is saying that you should have your own ideas and not listen to what other people say. In the passage we read the person on trial said that people that have great Ideas are normally killed by the invention because people think that the person is doing something evil. I think this has greta meaning to our world today. Like when the first Iphone came out people did not like it but over a period of time people started to like it.

    3. The collectivist is all about control or the control of people in a society. In the passage we read in class it was a guy talking about controlling people. Most people don't know they are being controlled. I think most people can say that we are all being controlled by the internet. The big companies like Google can permit what you see or what you don’t see. They can permit what kind of ads you see,but we don’t care because we need the internet or we think we need the internet to survive.

    Introduction to Objectivism:
Objectivism is something we all have in common, and I have a few connections with this word. For example, I fought with my big brother so I could play his Nintendo DS when I was younger. Another example would be me eating the last slice of cheesecake when I should have shared it. My last example would be me taking a DS game my brother did not want me to play. I can clearly say that I am a bit of a objectivist.

    The Soul of an Individualist:
I believe most people are afraid of change in technology and in life. For example, when Equality-72521 showed his creation to the World Council of Scholars, they were angry. They said that he and other people should not harness this power. Therefore, Equality was lashed. Even though change is scary, we have to look on the bright side.

    The Soul of the Collectivist:
I do a have a few questions on the collectivist. Why does Ayn Rand want people to be selfish? Do you think collectivists should change their ways? Do you feel like a collectivist sometimes? Is it a bad trait to have?

    Objectivism

The word selfishness can be described in many ways. One of the ways we think of selfishness is when we only think about of ourselves not about anyone else or the world. What Ayn Rand’s is referring to the word selfishness is that we should think about ourselves, other people, and the world and that we should speak about what we believe and not rely on faith. She said this because she does not believe in god or faith.

    The soul of an individualist

I think that people shut down new inventions because when you are used to doing one thing it is hard to do something new and it is hard to stop doing it. People are afraid because the would have no idea what it would to the economy or the effects on the economy.

    The soul of the collectivist

When you are in a group and doing a project there is a positive and a negative. The positive thing about group work is that you are not alone when you are presenting and you can divide sections or topics for the peoples in your group. The negative thing is that your ideas don’t get shared with the group and only one person in the group is doing all the work instead of them working as a group.

    1. I think some very interesting points were brought up in “Introduction to Objectivism”, like the idea of following reason over whims and faiths and that people should live their lives doing whatever makes THEM happy, not what the collective society told them to do for the society’s benefit. I feel like this video and the bulleted list after are basically an explanation of the philosophy of Prometheus in “Anthem”, since so many of the ideals central to objectivism were ones that Prometheus held dear, but called his curse before finally accepting and embracing who he truly was. I also like “Introduction to Objectivism”’s definition of the word selfishness, because so often in today’s society it is interpreted as only thinking about yourself and not being concerned with the thoughts of others. Objectivism calls selfishness the realization of one’s highest potential through pursuing their dreams and living in harmony with others, and I think based on this definition selfishness isn’t as bad as it’s played out to be.

    2. “The Soul of an Individualist” is a passage from Ayn Rand’s “The Fountainhead” in which the main character, Howard Roark, gives a speech about the difficulties of standout people, or people who create some sort of revolutionary technology that was shunned upon being invented because it, and its creator, didn’t conform to the social norms, but was incorporated into daily life and loved by society like the genius invention it was, but too late for the creator to benefit. This, too, has a huge connection to Prometheus in “Anthem” because Prometheus falls into Howard Roark’s category of “inventors”, who just want to bring their knowledge and brilliance to the world no matter the cost. Indeed, both Prometheus and Roark were shunned for their ideals and doomed to live lives of hardship. I find Roark’s talk of man’s brain being his only tool for survival particularly interesting, since there are animals in the world that are bigger, faster, stronger than us, but what makes us the dominant species on Earth is our brains and creativity. It is with our minds that man was able to think of new ways to get food, new ways to live and thrive, and new technologies to help advance us as a society. Without our minds and those individuals who dared stand out from the crowd, humanity would be nowhere right now.

    3. “The Soul of a Collectivist” is a passage, also from Ayn Rand’s “The Fountainhead”. In this passage, Ellsworth M. Toohey, who is the main villain of the novel and the ultimate advocate of the ideal of the WE that Prometheus so despised at the end of “Anthem”, explains to another character how exactly to manipulate man into believing in the collectivist idea. What most interests me in this passage is Toohey’s talk of a man’s soul being the center of his individuality and that ruling over it is the only way to truly destroy a man’s individuality. I think while horribly corrupt in philosophy, Toohey was right about why so many great empires have fallen over the course of human history- Caesar, Napoleon, Attila, none of them aimed to conquer man’s soul, only the land man held. When the soul is still free, man has the capacity to rebel and fight back against their rulers, but when the soul is conquered men wouldn’t dream of it, nor would they dream of anything else.

Your last few sentences are very true, in how the conquering of land does not guarantee the long lasting of the empire. I think Equality or Prometheus touched upon this to, that all the past emperors and kings never controlled the man for his right was stronger than theirs. I believe it is almost impossible to conquer all the men's souls, for there will always be an outsider, a different person who is born with the mindset of a Individualist. This can be seen many times during all of history from Gandhi, MLK, JFK, and more.

1: Something that caught my eye on the first website was their opinion on love and selflessness, “ it’s a union of mind and body that both people pursue for their own happiness.”. I liked this because it sheds light on what love actually is, you love a person because it makes you feel good inside, and maybe because loving them might make you feel better too. I think that this is true because if someone random came up to you on the street and said “love me” you wouldn’t do it. I liked this website because it has some interesting ideas on the concepts of ayn rands books.
2: I think that everyone is scared of change. Change means different and once people have their own “Normal” in their minds, they aren't always apt to change it. Just like how equality's invention wasn’t accepted because the Scholars didn't want to go through the process of the inventions being accepted, even though his idea was phenomenal.
3: This website is mostly about how we are being easily led to conclusions with our current day society. Since the human attention span is incredibly short, we tent to gloss over things all based on a title. For instance, if you saw a news article about Andover high school saying that almost all of the kids there had at least a 2.0 GPA, which is absolutely misleading, you might believe it subconsciously and move onto another page. I think that none of us are truly ourselves, I feel like most of us are collections of other people that were around.

    1. one thing that i found interesting was her opinion on self importance and how you should put your self before all others. i agree with this statement in how it would improve your life greatly but it would not make you very liked by many. Lots of peapole think that these typea of peapole are selfing but realy there just looking out for them selfs.

2.i think lots of very good ideas get shut down becuse its diffrent and peapole historicaly dont like change. Like in the book this brilliant architecht get a f becuse he makes it reasonabley and not how it is done historicly

3.when peapole are put into a group some peapole fallow and some peapole lead and some times when the leader is not challeged in any way that can be bad and that is what a dictatorship is.but if the collectivism is lead by more then one person that does what ever he wants and those peapole are good then it can be good

On the website Introduction to Objectivism one thing I found interesting is Ayn Rand’s definition of selfishness. Also how he uses the word. Many people have different meanings and definitions than others. For example, Ayn Rand’s philosophy of selfishness is Work hard to achieve a life of purpose and productiveness and Follow reason, not whims or faith. In my opinion it is only caring about yourself and nobody else. Also not sharing and doing anything to help other people out.

On the website The Soul of an Individualist one thing I found interesting was change and how some people adapt to change better than others. I think some people are scared of change because they don’t know if the outcome will be good or bad. I think this relates to the book Anthem because they didn’t except Equality’s idea because they didn’t want him to be different or be superior to others.

On the website The Soul of an Individualist one thing I found interesting was the importance of groups. For some people groups work and others not so much. The bright side of groups is sometimes they work together and everyone gives their ideas. Other times one person in the groups and takes control. Usually they don’t listen to anyone and just write their ideas down.

I also agree that effective groups can be efficient in their work, but for the most part many groups are very divided in the amount of work they do, for different personalities and different styles of work are seen in everyone of us. However, overall groups in my opinion are worse than individual group, which Ayn Rand would support very highly.

    Introduction to Objectivism
Throughout looking through the website, what made me realize about Objectivism was that Ayn Rand was trying to answer the world’s ultimate question, “What is the meaning of life?” She thinks that the philosophy for living on Earth can be done with Objectivism. Whether you live multiple lives or not, you should always live your life to the fullest and make sure that your life story is filled with something you desire, that you are satisfied with your life. This reminds me a lot on how medieval era eastern civilizations like Japan had a similar mindset on living everyday of your life as best as you can. Of course this might’ve been because of the constant fear or tsunamis and such, but the main idea was clear, that your own life is far more important than someone else’s, but not in a selfish way. Talking about selfishness, Ayn Rand believed that a true objectivist would act on his own rational self interest. This as her own words, did not mean “to do as he pleases”, or to associate this interest with irrational emotions, feelings, urges, wishes, or whims. A philosophy that is the complete opposite of this is Altruism, which is the belief in or practice of disinterested and selfless concern for the well-being of others. She thinks this is one of the worst philosophies, and that usually poor people or people lower on the economic scale can be benefitters of this, which she says is absolutely wrong. She says that poor people rely too much in the selflessness of others, which would be the reason for charities, food organizations, and more. Ayn Rand doesn’t mean that all of this is bad, but she touches on the fact that the rich and poor both struggle in life, that the only difference between them is their ambition to succeed and to achieve. She says the principle of Altruism and selflessness can be seen in many religions like Christianity, which in turn can be seen to be the building blocks of our country’s development in the “American dream.” In Ayn Rand’s video on “The Pursuit of Happiness,” she says the most important rule in life was that “man’s right was to set his own goals, to choose his values, and to achieve them.” She thinks that the word happiness has a completely different meaning than what people think of. Happiness does not mean just the emotion of pleasure and enjoyment, it means the mind’s rational pride or self esteem on one’s achievement. The only way to achieve this in life was for a rational man following rational code of morality, or basically for a man to know the difference between right and wrong in a logical manner. This can be heavily seen in Anthem, where Equality seems to know that something was definitely wrong in his society, and later experienced true happiness after finding out what freedom he had outside of this society. Equality also achieved this happiness from his own selfishness, when he was selfish and greedy about his own invention, and later resulted in his punishment of death. However, since of his selfishness, he escaped and fully lived through a happy, free, and knowledgeable life with no restrictions or barriers to anything. In my opinion, I think that objectivism should be the principle of all life, to eventually create a society ambitious in not just having pleasures and joy in there life, but the ambition to succeed and to do whatever it take to do it.

    The Soul of an Individualist
In all of the quotes on her website, the two that caught my attention the most were the 9th quote down and the 21st quote down. That first quote mainly focuses on the main difference between individualism and collectivism, that the collective mindset/brain does not exist, it just cannot happen. She says this by saying “An agreement reached by a group of men is only a compromise or an average drawn upon many individual thoughts… The process of reason must be performed by each man alone.” She is saying that an agreement to anything is just a mix and blend of all the creative minds inputting to make an overall answer. One analogy I like to think about this is that an agreement is not just a single liquid like milk or water, which would be collectivism, but agreements are more like stew in a melting pot, the churning, blended soup being all the different ideas connecting together as one, overall unified consensus. The other quote that grabbed my attention was the 21st quote. This quote was the basis of collectivism, that it is rightfully and logically good to agree with others and to go with the group. She explains this from her quote by saying, “Men have been taught that it is a virtue to agree with others. But the creator is the man who disagrees. Men have been taught that it is a virtue to swim with the current. But the creator is the man who goes against the current. Men have been taught that it is a virtue to stand together. But the creator is the man who stands alone.” Throughout our life, from the very beginning of middle school where everyone has the ability to understand thoroughly, we are taught to be different than others, for it won’t matter what you wear 10 years later, it won’t matter what you like 10 years later, it doesn’t matter what special interests you have 10 years later. In my opinion, even with the whole school community trying to show that differences is the key to creative and willing mindsets that would be used throughout your whole life, collectivism is such a powerful thing that seems to be from instinct, our natural ability to think as a group. Let's admit it., there are always the “popular” or “trendy” things and cliques we know in school that we have admittedly done, ranging from putty to slime, agar.io to Fortnite, vine to TikTok, the list is endless. And are these trends really because everyone genuinely have an interest in them, or is it the fact that it would be “weird” and “not cool” to not be into these trends. These trends I think have only been getting even more and more frequent from the ever so huge web, the internet. You can see these “trendsetters” anytime on the internet, from pop stars, to celebrities, to random videos on youtube. What matters is the fact on how quickly these spread, and especially in middle school and high school do these trends seem to matter the most at that time, and you would need to change yourself to go along with this and be “cool.”

    The Soul of the Collectivist
I think this page out of all 3 of them was the most funny yet connecting ideas. This is because of all the different ways Ellsworth M. Toohey has basically planned the destruction of human society the way we know it and how it is literally Anthem’s world. What surprises me the most is that Equality seemed to know and understand how his old society must’ve come to be, and it is these people like Toohey that want to get rid of all selfishness, greed, creativity, innovation, reason and to replace with obedience, unity, selflessness, and basically the world’s whole desire to be accomplished and successful. What is ironical about this is that although immediately we would think this is too extreme and that society would never do this, it is such a structurally advanced society with everything in order. There would be many benefits to this, for example less wars and deaths by murder, a much more peaceful environment filled with care, and overall the efficiency in work would be phenomenal. However, this cannot be accounted by the fact of the sheer number of negatives, rights, and freedoms we would lose to all of this. Why have individual, creative minds when you can have the whole world in the same mindset, with the same goal; to help anyone in need and to think only about others, and not themselves. This is what Toohey is trying to show, and knows exactly how to accomplish this. There are many ways, but the most important he says is to get rid of happiness, which I said about in my objectivism paragraph that happiness leads into Ayn Rand’s definition of selfishness. He says a great help of this is Altruism, to make everyone guilty of wanting and to be ashamed of this. Unhappy men would be the greatest help, for they need your comfort, your sympathy, your consolation. Toohey also says that the greatest weapon against his idea would be reason. Reason is why people think morally, what people think naturally and think that it is the right thing to do. This is why Toohey again thinks of how to get rid of this, to say that it is limited, and flawed. You must not be too clear, but essentially say how instinct or the feeling of someone has nothing to do with actual science and facts, that this is just on what society thinks is right or wrong. Overall, if Toohey was a real person, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he was one of the greatest conquerors of all time, and the greatest strategically and persuasive conquerors. I say this for Toohey has thought of every single outcome to where it would seem as if his plan was lacking something, he has mastered how to be unclear in something, how to pour guilt and shame to someone’s heart, and how to get rid of phrases that apply in selfishness. Although his quotes weren’t enough to sway me into thinking collectivism is right, which ironically is what Ayn Rand is not showing, but I feel as if this would definitely sway others, which is Ayn Rand's warning sign to all of us about Collectivism, how effective trickery in words is so scary.

In Ayn Rands own words, “wishing wont make it so”, shows that just because you want something and believe in it, doesn’t mean that it will happen. I thinks she wants to prceive a message that says if you want something, then you have to work for it. “Our capacity for thought gives us the ability to understand our own reality, and the choice to use this knowladge for our own good purpose.” These words may not be exact to the document, they help show that we have the ability to make it on our own instead of just trying to ride along through, or on other peoples coat-tails, and that we can use our own minds to make ourselves succeed.

    2. I beilieve that Ayn Rand, on the next website, was trying to prpare people of the the fear that came along with change. To change something, it means to do something differently than how you normally do it, and that can be very scary, and challenging fo some people. In the novel, “Anthem”, prometheuses invention of electricity wasnt accepted because the people were afraid of change and how it was going to affect their society.

    3. I feel that Ayn Rands stand on collectivism suits her personallity very well, because collectivism is all about controlling the way people think or do things, or how they should control their society. I feel that almost all of ayn rands books show collectivism because of how a group or a dictator rules society and wants to keep things in order, but there is almost always a protagonist, that sees thing differently and wants to change society for the greater good.

I found it interesting Ayn Rand said, “if you know that this life is all that you have wouldn’t you make the most of it?” Usually when you hear people say that you associate it with Y.O.L.O. and these two sayings are often peoples reasonings for doing whatever they want and saying it’s ok to be wild and selfish. She does not like the government but the government in a way is about self. We had a President and we get them but having any people nominate themselves to run the country. I feel like they are linked.

People are sometimes afraid of change or going against the flow. It’s hard to imagine how others will react to the change one is making, the thought of that is sometimes so intimidating that people just stay the same.

I think that to find the absence of collectivism you have to go back to the first hour. Collectivism is all around us, our school, job, and home and sometimes people aren’t collectivists they either don’t understand what is going on or they don’t want to speak against the larger crowd.

    Objectivism:
Ayn Rand wants people to be selfish, not the selfish we all think like how people are inconsiderate but push yourself to be a better you. It says things like “Earn genuine self-esteem” and “pursue your happiness as your highest aimed moral” Which I think is great people need to think better of themselves it gives them more confidence. Being slefish does not always mean that people are insensitive and only doing things that benefit them. It really is just wanting themselves to do well and working hard.

    Soul of an individualist:
An individualist is someone who is self-dependent someone who likes to do things by themselves. This page shows stories of how people accomplish stuff because they are an individualist. It shows the real motivation people have and how they are only inspired by themselves. “And only living for himself he was able to achieve things which are the glory of mankind. Such is the nature of achievement.” This is the writer really proving he is driven by himself.

    Soul of a collectivist:
This is about someone who breaks tradition and likes to do things differently. Collectivist are more disciplined in a way they are more strict with how work is done and harder on themselves. Which in a way is good, but people like this tend to struggle with being creative. Judgment is how they get their work done they want good feedback, which is why they are such hard workers.

I agree with your last few sentences when you said that Collectivism is all around us. I also agree with when you said that people may not know what is going on in the world.

    introduction to Objectivism

In the introduction to Objectivism, when Rand says “Our basic choice in life is “to think or not.” in my opinion this means, you can either think for yourself and do things that better your life or you can not think for yourself and just follow what society says for you to do or not try and better your own life but better the worlds life.

    The Soul of an Individualist

In History, it seems that people who think of something that could help the better the world get shut down or they get cast out of society. That is all because of the high ranking people who own what is currently going on, they get nervous that they may lose their profit or they might not be so “high and mighty” anymore. Sometimes just normal people will not accept things that will help society. For example, the thought of self-driving cars, having self-driving cars would cut down on vehicle caused death but people do not like the thought of not being in complete control of everything they are doing.

    The Soul of the Collectivist

I have found that when we work in a group if someone suggests something to do or what to write, the other group members will usually agree on that to do even if it is not on topic or the suggestion does not seem like it will get you a bad grade. Another thing I noticed is that when it comes to presenting you it will be someone in your groups turn to talk and they will freeze or stutter a lot because the group instead of planning anything they just jump right into working off of an idea.

    1. Introduction to Objectivism

I agree with Ayn Rand’s philosophy. I noticed that Rand’s philosophy embraces the importance of self, just like in Anthem where we are shown that recognition of self is important for a stable economy. I find it interesting that Rand emphasizes selfishness in a good way rather than the way most of us would look at it.

    2. The Soul of an Individualist (From For the New Individualist) by Ayn Rand

This speech focuses on the importance of individualism (being oneself) in order to succeed. Rand explains that when you ‘enlighten’ others to a new idea, they might shoot you down for it. Which is why it is important to be selfish in a constructive way. That doesn’t mean being arrogant, but it means having and pursuing your own ideas.

    3. The Soul of the Collectivist (From For the New Individualist) by Ayn Rand

The collectivist is focused on the opposite of the individualist. The mind of a collectivist is set on people working as one, rather than people using their minds as individuals. A collectivist almost wants to control other people and have all of us work towards a common goal.
